Rosio Pavoris a blog

My staff doesn’t read my blog…

Boo. >.>

Great progress in Muffins. Added another layer of security to the login thing, and made it better in general. This made it so people couldn’t log in for half an hour, but nobody was trying, I don’t think.

Added a bunch of new mechanics today (including stat boosts from items), as well as some new content. New store and two new zones, very heavy on TMBG references.
I wonder how many people will get them. >.>

Mmhm.

I’m debating adding a shared WordPress blog for staff, to keep tracks of updates to subdomains and whatnot. Thoughts?

Myspace…

/villa was talking about Myspace, which I avoid on principle, because it, like most sites with over a million users (38 million, according to Wikipedia), infested with morons not worth my time or bandwidth (including, as you may remember, most of my RL friends).
I was about to go off into a rant about it, when I realised that I couldn’t be alone in my dislike of Myspace, and someone else had probably done a lot more research than I had on this.

Sure enough.
Just one article of many, of course, but the fact that something so basic still exists after two years of uptime is… frightening.

Bleep

Set up a Cafepress store with some Rocketfish merchandise, here. Yes, Cafepress, but meh.
Looks like they’re making efforts to not have really shitty quality printing now, and their TOS is a fuck of a lot less restrictive than Spreadshirt. Not making any profits on it, though. Expensive enough as it is.

Now I need to remember to actually order some stuff, if I want to get it before KoLondon. And maybe ship Mai a thong. >.>

So…

Absent for almost two days, reasons for which need not be discussed. I’m probably going to give someone else the power (and responsibility) to manually roll over Muffins.

You are an atheist, a rationalist, a believer in the triumph of science and of reason over libido. You can’t stand mumbo jumbo, ritual, spiritual nonsense of any kind, and you refuse to allow for these longings in others.

Astrologers, Scientologists and new–age crystal ball creeps are no different in your view from priests, rabbis and imams. They’re all just weak–minded pilgrims on the road to easy answers. Nature as revealed by science is awesome enough for you, but it’s a nature that needs curbing and taming by us on our evolutionary journey to perfection.

Your heros are Einstein, Darwin, Marx and — these days — Gould, Blakemore, Watson, Crick and Rosalind Franklin. Could you be hiding a little behind those absolutist views, worried that, if you let in a few doubts and contradictory ideas, the whole edifice might crumble? Loosen up a bit and try to enjoy the amazing variety of human belief systems. Don’t worry — it’s unlikely you’ll end up chanting your days away in some distant mountain cult.

What kind of humanist are you? Click here to find out.

The first few paragraphs are correct, but the last one is just… huh. I didn’t dismiss religion and superstition “just because”, and my views are far from absolutist.
Kind of offensive, really.

Boo.

Got knocked into low bandwidth for three days, because of (presumably) my sister. Then, yesterday, I decided to sleep in, but my mom disagreed. Apparently getting up at 6 PM when I have a 9 AM class is a reason to cut my internet for a day. Meh.
So, all in all, I got very little work done in the past week, though I’ve been racing to catch up.

I implemented some new things in Muffins, most importantly (from a player-side perspective) at this point being the PM system. Yes, this opens up the possibility of multi abuse, though measures are in place to track that. I’m more concerned about people breaking things with the text input. At least I remembered to protect against bogus remote form submission and (damn you, Terras) negative amounts of items and muffins being sent. Trying to send someone negative muffins will send him all of your muffins instead. I wonder if anyone’s ever going to dare to complain about that.
Also working on the temple quests. The pieces of the True Wheel have already been implemented (counterpart to the goldfish scales), but there’s nobody to give them to yet. The entire temple district has been drawn, though I still have to write the actual quest code, and draw the rest of the city (which is going to take forever, even if I manage to get some awesome ideas).
All very interesting, no doubt.

Game was up and down for stretches as I struggled to limit adventures per day, and wrote rollover and admin scripts.

Rollover is manual for now. +1,000 adventures, caps out at 10,000. That way, bored people get to play around with it, but bots don’t rape me up the ass with pineapples.
Also wrote some stat generator thingies, to which I will add later.

Dropped the link into #radio-kol and /villa, but it mostly attracted nubs, I think. Sephiroth (I think) also passed it around /veteran (I think). At this rate, I’ll have to cap registrations at 100 players.

MUFFINS!

Muffins is coming along nicely. The first real bug was found and squashed. It’s technically still possible to play without a valid cookie, but meh. I’ll deal with that eventually.

Implemented the first quest today, and made it so I’m not limited to a 3×3 map anymore.Total of 9×9 should be enough, but it can be expanded indefinitely, I guess.
And the city is eventually going to have a port, so if another island/continent is needed, that works too.

Still having fun working on this. ^__________^

Gyaah…

Tired. -_-
Sakurai didn’t show up for our morning class, but didn’t bother to warn anyone. Got up two hours earlier than I could’ve (7 AM instead of 9 AM), after I’d stayed up until 3 AM the night before, working on a new pet project.

Said pet project being this. Play around with it, if you like, but don’t get too attached to anything you find while adventures are still infinite (at this point, only stats).

Bloop

I was going to redo the MSAIT maps now, but I can’t be bothered. Should probably do it before (or around) next rollover, though, what with first contact and everything.

Anyway: random quiz.

You Are a Goth!
You’re so gothically outrageous, and you aren’t afraid to flaunt it.
Whether you dress up like Robert Smith or a tragic Little Bo Peep,
chances are that you’ll be parading around with the rest of the goths at Yoyogi Park on Sunday.
Don’t forget your white makeup and blue lipstick! Who knows?
You may just get picked up by one of the seedy photographers.
What’s Your Japanese Subculture?

Haw, topical. And, y’know. Incorrect. But whatever.

I’m nearing the end of Science of Discworld 3, and it’s… meh. The least intelligent SoD so far, I think. I’ll review it once I’ve finished it.

I’m thinking about turning MSAIT into a fully automated game. The more I think about it, the more feasible it seems. It’d be more limited than the current MSAIT, probably, and would be a fuck of a lot of effort.
I’ll probably try a KoL knock-off first. Shouldn’t be too terribly hard, and it’ll burn some more bandwidth, at least.

I’ll be optimising our databases soonish. If possible, roll all WordPress databases into one, because, apparently unlimited means 15 (as I’m sure I’ve mentioned). Maybe get rid of the ones that are very obviously dead (by which I mean Lori’s). On the whole, this shouldn’t affect anything on your end.

Sooo…

I fixed itemnamesearch.php. Was an issue with variables not getting discarded at the needed points in the loop and whatnot. Fixed it, cleaned it up, cut the size of the file in half.
Doesn’t show descriptions at this point, and I’m not sure it ever will. That’s a pain to code, and would probably be cluttery. Maybe I’ll do the on-click pop-up thing Jick does, though. That’d be pretty easy, and a lot cleaner.
Also made itemsearch.php (and the corresponding forms) work through $_GET instead of $_POST, making it considerably more useful.

Apparently people did notice I left Lothlorien, kind of. Probably only because Meggery posted on the ‘lorien forums.
Elarrina messaged me, not trying very hard to get me to return, but meh. She noticed before it got mentioned on the forums (might’ve said this before, even). Then I told Meggery in IRC, and she posted in the thread where I had the (aborted) argument with sassylassy.

Then, Belgarion messaged me, and apologised “for Lorien becoming suddenly and inexplicably lame”, which was cool. I explained why I left, more or less (i.e. SewerRatz, Sentry22, now sassylassy, and #radio-kol being a fucking mess), and told him I might want to return eventually.
Belgarion (private): :) Do as you feel best. We’ll always be here for you if you’d like to return.

Then, earlier today, YellowSnowCone messaged me as well. Told me she missed me and was sad I didn’t even say goodbye.
I wonder.

Anyway, upshot of the whole thing is that Meggery’s in Clanopotomus now (presumably her first stop on her clan tour, if that’s still on), at least partially because I left, and YellowSnowCone is now in The Playghuol Mansion, probably just visiting. Seraph understands why I left, and notes a lot of cool people are leaving.

Inari fucked up in #radio-kol, and lost whatever support she had there. Skatje’s helping by having a certain picture in her Photobucket (yes, that’s inari on the far right), so whichever fanboys base their fanboyism on the idea that inari’s hot are dropping off as well.
Apparently she (inari) was confronted with that picture in Coffee Love earlier (Dave asked her if that was really her), but she pretended to be busy and refused to answer. Later, she bugged Skatje about it.

Incidentally, the Lothlorien thread where I bitched about inari abusing her ops. Sassylassy assumed I was also bitching about her as a mod, while I wasn’t. I’ve only been bothered by inari in her capacity as mod once, when she threatened to ban me in /villa because of a disagreement in #radio-kol (can’t even remember what that was about, now), which may or may not have been a joke (leaning towards not).
Apparently, though, some other Lorienites also thought I wanted inari demodded, and voiced their support. Meggery was the only one to do so publicly, but a few others joined in over PM. Some of them quite influential in-game.
Haw. Would be kind of funny if she lost moderatorship over this.

Doubt it, though. AFAIK, mods elect each other, except when Skully intervenes, and most mods tend to be painfully naive, or extremely hostile towards suggestions that one of them sucks massive ass, or, most often, both. And Skully, of course, just fails in general.
I wish Jick would just get rid of all current mods, and start over from scratch, appointing mods who don’t care so much about “correctness” (or the image (of their view) thereof) as they do about weeding out shitgarglers. I still say Xenophobe (or, more accurately, Xenophobe’s reputation) would make an excellent mod.

Boooooooooo!

Early classes suck, especially after six-day weekends. Getting up at 7 AM is blegh.
And then coming home at 11:30ish (walked all the way from the train station, because for some reason, the phone networks hate me, so I couldn’t SMS my mom to come and pick me up) to my little cousin drooling all over my comics… Ugh.

Well, I guess she doesn’t really drool anymore. And they weren’t my comics. I only have a handful, and I’d have thrown her out the window if she’d so much as looked at them (not that she would have, as they’re in my room, and my mom should know better by now than to let 8-year-old girls into my bedroom; I guess that sentence could use better phrasing).
Didn’t stop her from being loud, smelly, and obnoxious, though. And now that she can actually form whole sentences, frustratingly imbecilic and arrogant. I don’t like being talked down to by 8-year-olds.

Seriously, my aunt is not someone who should have children. What happened to teaching them manners?
My mom made us lunch, with, like, soup and ’spensive meatstuffs and things, and she refused to touch any of it, claiming it was “disgusting and burnt”, in her most vulgar Limburgian accent.
And she almost beat the shit out of our dog. I accidentally kicked her down the stairs before she managed to hit him anywhere painful, though. >.>

Yes, I kicked an 8-year-old down some stairs. She fucking deserved it.

Six-day weekends rock

Threat of train strike last Friday, so I stayed home, to be on the safe side. Turns out they didn’t go on strike after all. Whoops. >.>
All Saints Day today and All Souls Day tomorrow, so no classes. Sometimes Catholic universities can be spiffy. And because of that, Sakurai and Takeyama decided to cancel their class on Monday, and I didn’t bother to go just for European Lit.
(They didn’t so much cancel class as move it around a bit; Sakurai taught to the Economics minors instead, because they’re behind, and Takeyama set up a thing where people could come to her if they had questions about the trial exams. I don’t think anyone did.)
Going to see Corpse Bride with Q and possibly Coren tomorrow. Q got the whole week off, because he’s a dirty, dirty bastard.

Lots of new content in KoL. Halloweeny things to close off the Gray/Grey/Ghey Plague deal, though meh. New items and zones have been added to YASS (which is apparently going to be the official name of the KoL subdomain). No quest spoilers, because they aren’t apparent yet.
#radio-kol is returning to normality. Inari stopped her retarded re-hopping of Zalan. KMD dropped by last night and hopped Meggery, but that didn’t last very long. Inari’s policy has no support whatsoever, and even Zalan specifically doesn’t seem to have any friends left. Other than, presumably, inari.
She’s being attention-whoringly “depressed” again. I wish she’d just quit playing.

Meggery supported me in the thread on the Lothlorien forums that got me to leave the clan. And she told me she’s thinking of looking for a new clan herself, now that I’ve left. Didn’t know I had that kind of influence.
I’d hope she stops by the Cult for a bit, but really, I doubt it’s her kind of clan. And /clan is dead anyway, so she could just hang out in #radio-kol, which she’s been doing. Meggery is probably the only decent new “regular” to come out of this, though some old visitors have become more regular now, most noteworthy of which is Mai.
Now Haplo and Fusilliban just need to come back.
