The return
On Monday, I’m going to enroll at the KUL, and un-enroll at the KHL. With luck, I’ll even be able to catch Intro to Higher Mathematics in the afternoon.
Screaming arguments with my parents are fun when I win them.
Obviously they aren’t terribly confident or supportive, as evidenced by the many questions of whether the credits I’ve earned at the KHL (which obviously don’t carry over to the KUL, though the reverse would be true) would expire or I’d be able to return to the second year next year if when I fail at the KUL. &c. What else is new~
Considering that it’s my own money, I don’t see what they’re complaining about.
Anyway, what this means is that I’ll be able to graduate a year earlier (in the best case; if I continued at the KHL it’d be three more years to get my (professional) Bachelor’s degree (even though it’s a three-year program and I’m technically in my second year; I missed a few credits for various reasons, and the fact that the sixth semester is supposed to be one giant internship means there’s much less flexibility when it comes to picking them up later on), one year of switching (because a vanilla professional BS (as opposed to an academic one) isn’t enough to be allowed into a Master’s program), and two years to get a Master’s degree (which I’d have to acquire with far less background knowledge than intended, because one year isn’t enough to turn a code monkey (which is what the KHL aims to produce) into a computar scientist), whereas if I switch now it’ll be three years to get my (academic) Bachelor’s, and two years of Master’s), and that I’ll probably make it through the next three years without strangling anyone (myself excluded) with a cat5 cable.
People with professional Bachelor’s degrees may make more money on average than those with academic Bachelor’s degrees, but I really don’t think that’s worth it.
The KUL’s classes started last Monday, so I’ll have missed a week of classes, but I doubt that’ll be a huge problem. I’m more annoyed with the fact that I lost a week of vacation, because the KHL started two weeks ago, and I’ve actually been going to (most of) those classes.
I probably won’t be able to move to Leuven this year, and the Faculty of Science (which is where I’ll be enrolled; the KUL has three CS programs, but the other two require that you put up with engineers (and eventually become one of them, I guess)) is in Heverlee, which is kind of a pain. The Rega building of the KHL (which is where the KHL’s Applied Computer Science classes take place) is a five-minute walk from the train station, but Heverlee is another fifteen-minute bus ride.
Of course, next semester the Rega building would be moving to Heverlee as well, so it’s really only less convenient for a semester. And the KUL gives its students free bus passes anyway.
I’m just curious how much (if any) of my tuition the KHL will be refunding. 530 € may not be a huge fortune, but it’s still 833 cups of coffee, or 53,000 catpennies.
Speaking of which, we have cats now. I’ll provide pictures as soon as I am able. Meanwhile, have a sugar glider.

(I don’t know if this also means a return to blogging. I very much doubt it.)
